[00:00:00:02 - 00:00:11:03]
I can tell you about all the marketing bells and whistles that will help you build your business. But without these three basic things, those bells and whistles aren't actually going to do much at all.
[00:00:11:03 - 00:00:17:00]
You cannot truly compete in the marketplace without these three things.
[00:00:17:00 - 00:00:18:16]
headshot, resume, and real.
[00:00:18:16 - 00:00:34:03]
Take the time to spruce them up, dust them off, maybe add some credits, add some clips, take that new photo shoot that you've been wanting to. Whatever you need to do to get these three marketing materials ready for the public. This is very important.
[00:00:34:03 - 00:01:09:07]
You're going to need them for actor's access, for backstage, for agent manager submissions. You're going to need them for really any audition at all. And then also to give to casting directors, directors, writers, producers, people that you meet at film festivals or just out and about. Very often I'll be talking to somebody that I meet at a premiere or a party, and I ask them to send me their materials. And that's what that means, headshot resume reel. So you never know where you're going to need them. It's better to have them and not need them than to really need them and not have them.
[00:01:09:07 - 00:01:19:18]
The sad and happy truth is that it is much easier than most people think to get into the top 1% of actors.
[00:01:20:22 - 00:01:39:02]
Do you know why I started a podcast? Well, not only because I wanna share free information for actors, writers, directors, and filmmakers, but I also did it because I heard a statistic that absolutely blew my top off to be in the top 1% of podcasts. Do you know what you need to do?
[00:01:40:18 - 00:02:03:20]
You need to make 21 episodes. That's it? I can do that. I don't know if it's gonna be good. I don't know if anyone's gonna listen. I don't think I'll probably ever get sponsored, but I can make 21 episodes. And when I found out how fricking easy it is to get into that top 1%, boy, I hopped in that booth so fast. If you just outlast everyone else and you stay at the table, chances are you're gonna succeed.
[00:02:05:15 - 00:02:12:21]
It can feel like everyone is doing everything all the time and that nothing that you're gonna do is gonna make a difference.
[00:02:14:01 - 00:02:45:05]
I assure you, that is not the case. Truthfully, you can reach the top 1% of whatever industry you are in, not only within your lifetime but probably much sooner. Look past the social media, look past the conversations you have at parties. People will front, but when you look under the hood and you see what's really going on, most people are not working that hard.
[00:02:46:11 - 00:03:28:13]
Most of them are just not putting in the hours that it takes to actually launch a business. I've talked to actors a lot about this and I asked them, "How many hours a week do you spend working on your business?" Not the craft, but the business. The answer that most give is between one to four hours per week. Most people who work a normal job are working 40 hours a week or more or 60 or 80. If you simply show up and put in a 40-hour work week towards your acting business for three months, I guarantee at the end of that three months, your career will have changed. It can't not change when you just show up and you put in the work.
[00:03:28:13 - 00:03:39:02]
Many, many people have secret dreams of being an actor. It's a very coveted job. If you wanna work in this industry, you're not entitled to a job in it. You have to earn it.
[00:03:40:03 - 00:04:26:04]
The good news is if you really, really care about it and if you are dedicated to it, you will work. The industry is not big enough for you to work consistently at your business and not succeed. It's just not that big. Success as an actor doesn't have to do with being gorgeous. It doesn't have to do with how young you are. It doesn't have to do with how experienced you are. I know actors who are gorgeous, very young, or have been doing it for 40 years and they're not seeing any movement. It also doesn't have to do with luck. I don't believe in luck. I believe we make our own luck and we make our own numbers. Many, many hundreds of thousands of people every year set out to do this job worldwide.
[00:04:27:21 - 00:04:51:12]
If you want to be a part of something that's in such high demand, you have to be prepared to view it as a business and do what it takes to launch that business. If you have made it this far and you're feeling fired up about the business that you are launching and the marketing that you're about to do, I think that you are probably going to see results by the end of the year.
[00:04:52:17 - 00:05:01:17]
I have seen people with no training whatsoever work like crazy. I have seen people who are very far from conventionally hot
[00:05:02:18 - 00:05:04:00]
work like crazy.
[00:05:05:05 - 00:05:14:18]
I have seen people with horrible personalities work all the time, great personalities work all the time. What do they all have in common?
[00:05:16:04 - 00:05:33:22]
They just show up and do the work. Wherever you are, now is the time. Take pride in who you are, how you look, and what you have to offer. It is enough. There's hundreds of thousands of people who would dream to be right where you are right now.
